It was a great place before the tsunami hit it, as well as Ko Phi Phi (a beautiful little island). I know they both got wiped out by the tsunami. Since they were both key tourist attractions I imagine they have been fixed up, at least for the most part, by now.

Phuket is a great place to visit but I prefere to go there in June and not in high season. I think high season should just about winding down. October is very rainy then November December the season is again in full swing.
Anyway as to your other question. Safe yes, STD's yes only not the end of the world. Make sure you use condoms and you will have to insist on this.
