Renting a car in Phuket?

I'm considering renting a car in Phuket and have visited many websites of such car rental companies. I wonder if the prices shown are fixed or the renters will actually allow us to bargain for a lower rental charge. If so, how much do you think will the rental cost be for a Honda Jazz/ Suzuki Caribian considering that I am going during the low season in June and will be renting for a period of 6-7 days.

Thanks in advance!

I rented a Honda Jazz for 800THB for a day in low season last year.

Got it from the airport.as there were 4 of us n made more sense renting and driving and exploring the place on our own. we'd have anyways paid 600 just to reach our hotel.

Yes they did haggle. came down from 1000 to 800, or was it 700.

there are a numerous counters at the airport itself. i asked the rent from all and then got the bargain from one. try to get it from the girls.they seemed to be easier to convince.

they got the car in a min and loaded our stuff and took us to the agency very nearby.

they asked me to keep passport but DONT do that. they asked for credit card payment but i didnt have a cc. so it was decided that i keep my national license. that's all and the payment wen i deliver the car back.

i took a video of the car with the lady there and she showed me all the scratches and a few small hits. but the car was new n in great shape.

make sure you talk to them abt the insurance cover. they say that if ur involved in an accident, dont move yr car from the scene of the accident till police and insurance ppl arrive... even if it chokes the rest of the traffic. if u can, take pic or videos immediately and dont confess if its ur mistake.

get the rest of the details from the rent person. and drive safe !!!

u wont need a car for more than a day in phuket. a day should be enough. but if u feel safe, a scooter will be more economical and more fun.... not for family tho.

have fun!!!

Don't be too concerned with saving a few baht and looking for a great price. Be more concerned that you are renting from a reputable company that fully insures you and will stand behind you if you have a problem or accident. To legally drive and rent a car in Thailand you need an International Driver's Permit (IDP). I would stay away from any company that allows you to rent a car without one, without an IDP you will be held liable for any accident whether it's your fault or not and could end up costing you a fortune and you could possibly be arrested as well. Although there's probably small local companies that have good insurance and are honest companies to rent from, it's probably best to rent from companies like Avis, Budget, Thrifty, etc. and be sure about the insurance coverage. Also, inspect the car throroughly before taking the car and point out and take pictures of any damage. Car rentals are cheap enough in Thailand and you'll most likely find very good rates during the low season, but don't just look for the best price, it could cost you a lot more in the long run.

if you go with a big name company like Hertz for example .... you can forget about negotiating. however, there are countless small rental car companies that you could bargain with .... a Honda Jazz should cost you right around $30 a day .... maybe a bit less.

i will warn you ahead of time though ..... maps in Thailand are generally inaccurate. driving around in between the cities should be no problem .... but dont even bother with a map inside the cities. they are a waste of time.

Unless there is something on Phuket that requires a car for your purpose....just rent a scooter or hire a driver for the day...i didnt see too many people renting cars there at all. Scooters are the way to go. Phuket is all about hanging on the beach, you are skipping Koh Phi Phi?

Dont be so concerned about saving a few dollars. Make sure that the rental company is reputible and that they offer good insurance cover for accident and medical.
