if you are not gay, I would stay clear of it. Just me though. From what I have heard, it is okay, but not exactly a bargain. There are numerous guesthouses and such that do not book on the internet in and around Karon beach. If you have to have a fridge, AC, Minibar, and so on, ok stay there, but if you use your hotel as just a place to sleep, a guesthouse is fine.
Either way, hoped it helped. Get there early in the day, most guesthouses will let you check in anytime, and you will not get charged extra. They may start to get full in the mid to late afternoon.
Also you can stay at another beach- like Kata- if you do not have obligations there in Karon.

have you checked live and let dive hostel? more like a budget hotel really and right next to karon beach. i stayed there for a week and it wasnt horrible. i would check hostelworld.com for ratings on smaller hotels/hostels.
