What is the restrictions on taking ciggerttes and alcohol overseas?

I'm flying with thai airways in June 2008 going to bangkok 2nights then Phuket 8 nights, want to buy duty free alcohol and cigerttes from sydney airport to take with me was only planning on taking carry on luggage is this possible? If not what about check-in luggage? There is 5 of us going 2 adults and 3 children ages 17 and 16 can they carry any of those in their luggage? And the same with arrivals? Please help :-)

The rule of thumb is passengers are allowed to bring in 200 sticks of cigs and 1 litre alcohol per person, which is deemed reasonable for personal consumption. Leave them in the duty-- free plastic bags and hand carry is the easiest way. Internal/domestic flights dont restrict and when you head out to Phuket just take them in your luggage. When you finally depart for home you have to abide by the arrival country's custom laws so check out Aus allowance beforehand. Happy holidays.

Go ahead bring all you want. Customs are not strict in Bangkok. Plus, they also have duty free there so you got no problem. You will only encounter problem if you go to Singapore. They have strict rules against tobacco there.
